Call Validation

Expose caller ID manipulation before connection

Out-of-band, real-time call verification between operators. Validation compares call event information across participating networks, helping operators detect Caller ID Spoofing, protect subscribers, and safeguard revenue.

Why it matters

A convincing caller ID can still be false

A familiar number, a company name, or even a logo displayed through branded calling does not by itself prove that a call is genuine. Validation checks the underlying call information to distinguish genuine calls from those using a manipulated identity, helping stop fraudsters from deceiving subscribers.

How it works

Check the identity behind the call

Validation compares what the originating and terminating operators record about the same call, providing a real-time out-of-band check beyond the information carried in call signaling.

How it works for CLI Spoofing

1
Fraudster

Spoofed call

A fraudster attempts to call Bruce using Anna’s phone number as the caller ID.

2
Operator B

Verification request

Bruce’s operator (Operator B) receives the incoming call and sends a verification request to Anna’s operator (Operator A) to check the call details.

3
Operator A

Comparison

Call event information from both networks is compared. Operator A confirms that Anna is not making the call, revealing the spoofed caller ID.

4
Operator B

Decision

Based on the verification result, Operator B can block the fraudulent call before it reaches Bruce.

Fraud scenarios

One verification mechanism. Multiple fraud scenarios.

CLI Spoofing

Detect discrepancies between the claimed caller identity and information recorded by the participating operators.

Roaming Fraud

Detect fake roaming calls, coordinate with other national MNOs.

Origin-Based Rating Fraud

Detect manipulated caller identity information used to misrepresent a call's geographic origin and exploit differences in termination rates.

Impersonation attempts

Support the identification of manipulated calling identities used to imitate trusted organizations.

Other types of fraud

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is Call Validation, and how does it work?

Call Validation is a real-time, network-to-network fraud prevention technology. It independently compares information about the same call recorded by the originating and terminating operators.
Both operators register relevant call details, including calling and called numbers and call events. The records are compared over a separate encrypted channel while the call is being set up. Discrepancies can trigger an operator-defined response before connection.

How does Call Validation differ from STIR/SHAKEN?

STIR/SHAKEN uses digital certificates and attestation to help authenticate caller ID information within supported networks. Call Validation takes a different approach: the originating and terminating operators independently compare records of the same call over a separate encrypted channel. This enables cross-network validation, including across participating international routes, without relying solely on caller ID attestation. The two approaches are complementary rather than mutually exclusive.

Do all operators need to be connected for Call Validation to work?

Both the originating and terminating operators must participate in Call Validation, but intermediate carriers on the call route do not need to be connected. Calls outside the participating network cannot undergo the same bilateral validation. For this traffic, AB Handshake's Traffic Intelligence provides complementary behavioral fraud detection.

Does Call Validation delay call setup?

Validation runs over a separate encrypted channel in parallel with call setup, rather than adding a sequential verification step to the signaling path. Specific performance characteristics depend on the network architecture and deployment configuration.

What happens when Call Validation is unavailable?

The response depends on the operator's network configuration and fraud prevention policies. Call Validation is designed to operate separately from the call signaling path, with handling of unavailable validation results defined as part of deployment.

How does Call Validation protect call data?

Call Validation compares call metadata and relevant events without analyzing conversation content. Information is exchanged between operator registries over an encrypted channel. Data storage, retention, residency, and access arrangements depend on the deployment and applicable regulatory requirements.

Can Call Validation work with our existing fraud management system?

Yes. Call Validation adds an independent network-to-network verification layer and can complement existing fraud detection and traffic management systems. It can also work alongside Traffic Intelligence, which identifies suspicious patterns through behavioral analysis.

How much does Call Validation cost?

Call Validation has been offered on a pay-as-you-go basis for validated traffic exchanged between participating operators. Commercial terms depend on network coverage, traffic volumes, and deployment requirements. Contact AB Handshake to discuss current pricing and pilot options.
